3 Sports Every Active Kid Should Start Playing Now

We try to put our girls in just about every sport available. The big reason is that it keeps them engaged and active and from logging countless hours watching PAW Patrol, Gabby’s Dollhouse, or Bluey (though I’m a sucker for Bluey). However, we also know that sports and activities can positively impact their physical, mental, and social development. Having tried numerous sports and being former competitive athletes we believe there are three sports that every active kid should start playing immediately!

1. Soccer

  • Why: Okay, this could be substituted for just about any team sport. However, soccer is one of the most accessible sports in the world and the perfect gateway to competitive athletics. We found leagues and camps for our girls that start as young as 3 years old (check out this league)! Soccer is excellent for developing cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and agility. It’s also a team sport that teaches kids about cooperation, communication, managing different personalities and working towards a common goal. The constant movement helps kids build endurance, and the sport’s global popularity allows them to connect with peers worldwide. Plus, they get home tired which makes bedtime that much easier 😉.

2. Swimming

  • Why: Swimming is a must (see this article)! Swimming is a full-body workout that builds strength, flexibility, and endurance. It’s also a life skill that can be essential for safety. Swimming improves lung capacity and is great for overall health. Since it’s a low-impact sport, it’s gentle on the joints, making it suitable for kids of all ages and abilities. We take our kids to the neighborhood recreation center where they receive lessons once a week. Check and see if you have a local recreation center, gym or organization that provides affordable lessons!

3. Tennis

  • Why: We have introduced the girls to golf and tee ball to help improve their motor skills especially their hand-eye coordination. However, tennis is a sport that improves not only coordination but agility, focus, and reaction time. It’s also great for strategic thinking. Tennis can be played both individually and in doubles, teaching kids to handle both solo pressure and team dynamics. It also provides a great cardiovascular workout and can be played throughout life.

Conclusion

Soccer, swimming, and tennis are sports that help develop qualities like discipline, resilience, teamwork, leadership, confidence, and mental toughness—traits that are crucial for success in any field. While we encourage multiple sports, these three should be part of every active kid’s foundation!
